Isn't it ironic, September is National Preparedness Month and once again Americans are witnessing unexpected  devestation and  the results  of a lack of preparedness.  All our hearts go out to the victums of Hurricane Katrina and many have jumped into the breach to provide help and comfort.  Now is a good time to ask ourselves how our own families would fare in the aftermath of a disaster.

There are many resources available to help you to prepare for an emergency and links are provided at the end of this article but one of the first things you'll want to do is sit down with your family and decided how you will personally deal with unforseen events.  How will you contact your children at their school or your spouse at work?  Where will you meet if direct contact is impossible.  What plans are in place at the kid's school, your own workplace?  How will you make contact with friends and relatives.  What will you do with your pets?

Please take a some time to visit the links below.  Americans have always been a self-reliant people, let's not loose that ability.
