You’ll need to gather some tools-

  • A clothes rod of some sort.  If your shower rod isn’t a very strong one try setting up a broomstick between two ladders.
  • A full length mirror.
  • Three large boxes or laundry baskets.  Label them "Donate" ," Toss" & "Fix"
  • A pen and pad of sticky notes

If you still like it and look good in it (this is where your friend comes in) rehang on right side of the rod.  If it needs repair, washing or dry cleaning make a note and stick it on the neck of the hanger.

Work your way, right to left, through everything (have you found all those things you tucked away last spring?).  Ask yourself if you feel comfortable and attractive in each piece of clothing.  If not, get rid of it.  Use your Toss and Donate bins as you go.

Next, step back and squint at the clothes hanging there.  What is the first color you see?  The second, the third?  These are most likely your “core” colors.  The colors you like the best are usually the ones that look best on you and make you feel good.

Next hang "like" clothes together; all pants, all skirts, tops, jackets, dresses.  Sort them by color.  Do you have three pair of black slacks, five white blouses?  Ask yourself if you need them all, discard some if appropriate.  By hanging like clothes together you’ll be able to see what you have and what you might need to fill in this season.

Fold those marked items into your Fix bin and either wash, repair or take to the dry cleaner.
The fall season is upon us; meetings, classes, plays and parties.  What are you going to wear?
Time to take stock of what you have and what you need to update for Fall 2004.  Let’s take a look at your closet.  First, set aside an afternoon or evening for this project.  Next, invite a friend whose judgment you trust
Now, pull your fall clothes out of the closet, storage or from under the bed and hang on clothes rod.  Go through your clothes trying on each piece.  Decide if you still like it.  Is the cut right, the color?  Look carefully for missing buttons, stains, ripped seams and hems.  If it’s beyond repair throw it in the Toss bin.  A note here; if you wouldn’t wear it due to it’s condition neither will anyone else so don’t Donate... Toss
As you hang things back in your closet sort by color and type of item.  Viewing by color and like items will let you see new combinations and outfits.  With a few dark skirts and slacks and some tops in your core colors you’ll be able to create dozens of combinations.  Maybe you don’t need to buy a thing!  Or, just maybe, that money could buy a new pair of boots!
